Multiband Distortion

What Are Multiband Distortion Plugins?

Multiband distortion plugins are audio effects used in digital music production that apply distortion to specific frequency ranges. Unlike conventional distortion plugins that affect the entire frequency spectrum uniformly, multiband plugins allow precise control over the tonal character of individual frequency bands typically divided into lows, mids, and highs.

How They Work

A typical multiband distortion plugin operates in three main stages:
  1. Frequency Splitting: The incoming audio signal is divided into two to four (or more) separate frequency bands.
  2. Individual Distortion Processing: Each band has its own distortion module with adjustable parameters such as drive, tone, mix, or gain.
  3. Recombination: The processed signals are then recombined into a full-range output.
